Existential question - The Jam, The Style Council or Paul Weller solo?

Getting really hung up on my Jam comp and think it's the best stuff he ever wrote. And the songs sorta ring in my head even when I'm not listening. Hellishly poetic as well.

As for The Style Council, I was a big fan as a teenager but just find the cod soul a bit smarmy now. The only song that still has any resonance is "Long Hot Summer" which was one of the very first music videos I saw.

Paul Weller solo is quite inconsistent. I adored "Peacock Suit", though.

Watched "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" with Becky yesterday. Quite novel way of presenting dialogue as lyrics. The recoloured backgrounds also seem too much like computer graphics.

Saw "Dead Man" as well. Quite okay piece of work. Liked the way Jarmusch weaved in a member of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers as one of the victims (Benmont Tench). Too full of allegory and symbolism for me to adequately understand it. Gary Farmer as the Injun "Nobody" is also kinda annoying. Shoulda been in colour as the scenery was captivating. The juxtaposition of the twigs on the dead Marshall's head is actually copied from a William Blake lithograph in "America", I think.

Didn't do the "Diner" thing with Becky. She didn't bring popcorn and it would have been a bit messy anyway. Eating popcorn out of her vagina, was it?

New Wave HAUL:-

Movies not music.

Hiroshima Mon Amour - Alain Resnais' masterpiece. Bit disappointed it's not like Last Year At Marienbad, which was disjointed and boring at the same time. Nice gruesome shots of atomic bomb victims at the start, though.

Shoot the Piano Player - More Truffaut. Funny and then sad.

Jules and Jim - Truffaut ad infinitum. Haven't watched this yet.

Umbrellas at Cherbourg - French musical from New Wave director Jacques Demy. Watching it with Becky later on. She's bringing popcorn.

Some new DVDs I got:-

The Proposition - violent Western set in 18th Century Australia. Written by Nick Cave. Alex (Scandinavian guy on the bulletin board chat forum I go to) will flip over this. Haven't watched it yet.

Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet - This is the one with Mel Gibson. Pretty good adaptation although the complexity and political machinations of the play has been sacrificed for a more straightforward story.

The Soft Skin - More French New Wave. This time from Francois Truffaut. A basic adultery story although the ending's kinda cool. Jean Desailly, the lead actor, also has a passing resemblance to Brian Wilson.

2 Cartoons:-

The Invincible Iron Man - Just to pander to my fanboyness. It's done by the Nips so pretty anime-ish. I wished they'd stick to the red and gold armour instead of the variety they have here. Covers his origins as well.

Doctor Strange - Another comic adaptation into the anime realm. Kinda crap costume. I wished they stuck to the Steve Ditko design. The story is not as compelling as Iron Man as well.

My latest HAUL:-

CDS:-

Jacky Cheung - Not Old Story (literal translation). Should be "The Undying Legend" or something.

Syd Barrett - Would You Miss Me? (Best Of). I loved Effervescing Elephant and it's on here.

Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero - Just wanted to complete my NIN stack of discs. Watched a recent DVD of him live and his band kicks ass.

DVDs:-

Concerts

Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys. Reminiscences and concert footage.

Faye Wong - Live at Budokan. Farewell concert from this Chinese diva (she's retired). Not a good selection of songs.

Movies

Wicked City - Tsui Hark produced anime/manga Hongkie flick. Not as good as I remembered it to be. Blew my mind when I saw it as a youngster.

Salon Kitty - Arthouse Nazisploitation flick. I'm a big fan of Tinto Brass.

I had sex with Becky. Is it just me? Or is sex over-rated?

Also managed to see Ratatouille. Yeah, it's pretty good as pugs said it was.

Going to take Becky to a pub or club later.

Bought the birth control pills yesterday and was in a blur when I got them. My illness resurged again somewhat but becalmed by the fact that I'll be sexing her this Sunday.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgot to say I hooked up with Becky last Sunday, watching Evan Almighty. Must be love at first sight gua.

Went out with Becky, my new gf yesterday. Pretty scary how she used to buy drugs for her ex. But kinda desperate to get into her pants anyway.

We made out but didn't get to 2nd base gua.
